Breakaway Hockey is a hockey brand that includes a hockey training facility in downtown Grande Prairie, an Oldtimers ice hockey league, a few ball hockey leagues ( coming soon ), and an ice hockey Men’s recreational league.
Grande Prairie has a large and passionate hockey community that we are proud to be a part of. After our opening in November of 2023 the local hockey community has been discovering our facility and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. We appreciate everyone that has come through the door as well as those that have spread the word.
Rob Mackay Hockey history
Growing up in Tumbler Ridge and playing hockey my whole life i have played hockey in GP for the last 30 years. At 16 I played in the Czech challenge cup in Prague Czech republic for team BC. I played 5 years of junior hockey including the first two years of the North West Junior Hockey League for the Dawson Creek Raiders 95-96 and the Tumbler Ridge Icemen 96-97. After that I Won the Junior B title with the expansion team Campbell River storm on Vancouver island. The following year I captained the Banff Hockey Academy making the all star game. During this time I helped coach multiple minor hockey teams while getting certified with Hockey Canada at the intermediate level ( the requirement to coach junior A at the time). Being a hockey addict I continued to be around the game in Penticton BC playing Mens hockey and Coaching for a summer in the Okanagan Hockey School. After making a contact in the OHS i connected with a team in Australia. The following year I played and coached at the club level in Australia and coached our top three teams as well as advising the other coaches in the organization. That year we sent more kids to the national programs than they had ever done in the past. Now, after playing mens league for many years we run a couple leagues and run tournaments of our own.
I love this game. I am addicted to this game. I love teaching this game and seeing other people improve on their passion. I am very thankful that I am now building a future in the sport that I cant get enough of. I look forward to meeting people in this awesome hockey community, training together and swapping old and new hockey stories.
